The Weather

Earth and Its Surroundings  ES S3.6  Investigating  INV S3.7 Using Technology UT S3.9
ES S3.6 Recognises that the Earth is the source of most materials and resources, and describes phenomena and processes, both natural and human, that form and change the Earth over time. INV S3.7 Conducts their own investigations and makes judgements based on the results of observing, questioning, planning, predicting, testing, collecting, recording and analysing data, and drawing conclusions. UT S3.9 Evaluates, selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources to meet the requirements and constraints of investigation and design tasks.

Skills: Students use appropriate tools and technology (barometer, thermometer and other equipment) to measure, gather, record, interpret, analyse in a spreadsheet. Present ideas using Information, Communication and Technology.(ICT)

Class Task:

Design a spreadsheet to record your own weather data and the data found on the Internet over a 2 week period.  Use the spreadsheet as an information source to assist you in resolving your design task.

Background Information:

The weather impacts on us, our work, and our social and leisure activities. We are dependent on the weather like to be aware as conditions change.  Weather is made up of many factors.

Design Brief:

Design a weather tracking system that you can use to collect and record observed weather conditions.

Create a weather report using computer-based technology to inform others about the weather. Explain basic factors that make up weather such as clouds, precipitation, pressure, temperature, wind and other things you found out.

Extension Activity:

Data could be collated over a longer time frame so that weather patterns can be established and school activities can be planned according to the most appropriate time of the year. e.g. camps, excursions, fetes.

Resources: For ideas access the following websites..

Weather from around the world.

Sydney Weather Report.

Make sure you look at the records in degrees Celsius.

Presentation: Using the Edu Utility a blank power point presentation named 'weather.ppt' and blank excel file named 'weather.xls' can be placed in each students work folder. The student then opens the files to complete their work. The files are hyperlinked and can be viewed in the web browser. This ensures all students have the files saved in the correct folder.
