Global Connections

Outcomes and Teaching and Learning Strategies

Background Information:

The majority of Australians enjoy the privilege of running water, daily food, clothes and houses to live in and most importantly good health. Others are not so lucky. World organisations have been formed to aid the developing countries which are struggling to survive.

Your task is to:

  1. Read the article The Global Citizen. In your HSIE book copy out the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As a group, discuss and sequence them in order of importance.
  2. Click here to read reports of aid given to those who are suffering. Choose 5 case studies, print out and fill in the information retrieval chart.
  3. From the information retrieval chart choose a basic need. Give 3 ways your life would be affected by the lack of this basic need in Australia (in your HSIE book).
  4. In your HSIE book, develop a set of criteria to assist our class in choosing a location that our school could support.
  5. As a class decide how you could raise money to send overseas through one of the Aid organisations.
  6.  Research the different International Aid Organisations, print out and fill in the Aid Organisation Retrieval Chart.
  7. In your HSIE book, develop a set of criteria to assist our class in choosing which organisation, operating in our chosen location,  to send our funds to.
  8. Choose a form of multimedia to present these findings to Year 6 convincing them of the need to support this group. Your presentation must outline how you will raise the money, why you feel this is a worthwhile cause, who the money will directly assist and how it might change their lives. Save your presentation to your eduweb work folder and link to this page or use the blank PowerPoint named globalconnect.ppt Instruction are outlined below.
  9. Email the appropriate aid organisation expressing your interest and support.
  10. As an ongoing task create a spreadsheet to keep a record of your fund raising.
  11. Print assessment sheet and fill in the self assessment section.

Using the EduWeb Topics Utility a blank power point presentation named 'globalconnect.ppt' can be placed in each students work folder. The student then opens 'globalconnect.ppt' to complete their work. The 'globalconnect.ppt' is hyperlinked and can be viewed in the web browser. This ensures all students have the presentation saved in the correct folder.
