ENS3.6 :Explains how various beliefs and practices influence the ways in which people interact with, change and value their environment.

Students will

  • express a point of view for or against tourism to Antarctica.

  • explain how various human practices have impacted on the Antarctic environment.

Students will use appropriate technology to express ideas and communicate with others.

Should tourists continue to visit Antarctica?

Your travel company wants to begin taking tourist groups to Antarctica but you want to minimise the impact of the group on this unique environment.

The company directors have asked you to research the impact of humans on the Antarctic environment and to prepare and present a Powerpoint slide show at the next board meeting.

Your presentation should include:

  • a report on current groups operating trips to Antarctica

-when did these groups start travelling to Antarctica

-what means of transport do they use to get there

-how long do the tours last

-where do the tours leave from

-what times of the year do the tours operate

-what do they do in Antarctica once they get there

  • From your knowledge of the impact of people on the Antarctic environment, identify the two environmental issues that should be of greatest concern to the company, giving reasons for your choice.

Your presentation should make recommendations supported by evidence for:

  • the group size and length of stay
  • accommodation options
  • any rules that need to be followed on entering and leaving  Antarctica
  • any rules that need to be followed while staying in Antarctica to minimise impact

Finally, your presentation should conclude:

  • By providing your personal opinion supported with reasons as to whether tourism to Antarctica should continue.

Resources:

Using the Edu Utility a blank power point presentation named 'blankantarctica.ppt' can be placed in each students work folder. The student then opens 'blankantarctica.ppt' to complete their work. The 'blankantarctica.ppt' is hyperlinked and can be viewed in the web browser. This ensures all students have the presentation saved in the correct folder.
