2013 Professional Learning Initiatives (2)

2013 Professional Learning Booklet

Professional learning in Sydney Region provides opportunities for all teachers to develop strong pedagogy and practices as school leaders. These professional learning opportunities enable schools to participate in a range of initiatives including action learning and action research projects, networks, workshops, school based implementation activities, on-line learning and resource development.

All courses, programs and projects identified in the Professional Learning book are either

  • Registered with the NSW Institute of Teachers, and aligned to teaching standards

  • Non Registered, still addressing some Institute standards, but not providing registered hours.
  • Developed courses or projects that do not directly address Institute standards.

Before selecting from these options school professional learning teams are advised to consider the following questions

  • What relevant data has been used to identify needs (e.g. NAPLAN results, HSC, school survey data, information from a situational analysis, or evaluations from the ASR)?
  • Does the professional learning address the school‟ priorities?
  • Which teachers would benefit, and is the learning best done individually or by a team?
  • What school processes ensure the professional learning is sustainable and transferable?
  • What initiatives have already occurred in this area? Have they been successful?
  • How familiar are teachers with action learning and action research?
  • How will the outcomes or success of the initiative be measured?
  • Who will track and monitor outcomes at the school?
  • How many initiatives, projects and networks should the school be involved in?
  • Is the initiative affordable in both money and time costs?
  • Is there a need to discuss possible involvement with regional teams or facilitators?

All professional learning should be linked to the school's improvement planning and identified priorities.

Schools are asked to download this booklet and discuss the courses on offer.
